Becoming a Mentor
CAMS is interested in identifying professionals who have the desire and time to help young people just starting out on their career paths. Mentors must be available to volunteer an hour a week with their protégé and attend special orientation and training programs offered by the school.

The mentor application process
Anyone interested in becoming a CAMS mentor must submit an application form and profile sheet to ensure compatibility with the program goals and an appropriate match with a student protégé. To request these forms, click here or call (310) 243-2027. The forms are also available by download at the above link or click here to go to the download page. In addition, mentor candidates must take part in an interview and provide current references.

In accordance with the Long Beach Unified School District's policy for adults working directly with minors, all mentors must be fingerprinted prior to beginning one-on-one meetings. CAMS handles the fingerprinting at no cost for all mentors who have successfully passed through the application and interview phases of the process. As a matter of policy, male mentors are matched with male protégé and female mentors with female protégé

Getting off to a good start
It's not always easy for two strangers to form a new relationship, whatever their ages. To assist with the process, CAMS requires all new mentor-proégé pairs to attend to attend a program orientation. At this mandatory session, mentors and protégé will take part in getting-started activities and learn strategies for developing a "plan" for their relationship that addresses both the student's academic and personal needs and the mentor's expectations and areas of interest and expertise.
